NoteworthyTHE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 24 - NO. 5 - MAY 96
Cosmo R. Castaldi, DDS, in February received the American Society for Testing and Materials' (ASTM's) Award of Merit for his years of distinguished service and outstanding leadership in the development of safety standards for ice hockey protective equipment. His work with the ASTM grew from his extensive experience in treating dental trauma in children and his experience with upper-level hockey in Canada and with coaching youth teams. Since the adoption of the standards by Canadian and US amateur hockey organizations, oral and facial injury rates in youth, high school, and college ice hockey have dramatically decreased.
Castaldi is emeritus professor of pediatric dentistry at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. Besides his involvement with the ASTM, Castaldi is a member of the Hockey Equipment Certification Council, and numerous professional organizations.
